The word “cupboard” was initially employed to describe a side table with open shelves that was used for showing cups, saucers, plates, and other dishware. The open cabinets typically comprised between 1 to 3 display tiers with one or multiple drawers fitted to them. Thus, word “cupboard” evolved to refer to furniture that houses dishes or other items of food that are kept within a house.

Built-in Design
Unlike cabinets, which are free-standing and movable, a built-in closet is an immovable space for storage, which is also part of the room’s overall interior.
Airing Design
An airing cupboard design is an enclosed walk-in space for storage, traditionally used to house a hot water tank; hence, also called boiler cupboards. These airing cupboards are also most commonly used to store laundry.
To create more space for clothes, shelves made of slats are installed on top of the heater. This is done to allow air circulation within the garments to avoid dampening.
Some airing cupboards are used as linen cupboards to store the towels and household linens. Thus, airing designs serve as dry spaces and used for clothes or wet outdoor shoes and clothing.
