With work-from-home or studying remotely being necessary during Covid days, here are 7 tips on making your study area or workspace at home.
With working from home being necessary in the current climate of Covid or studying remotely, creating a great spot at home that is conducive to studying and working is essential. It’s important to understand how you need your space to function for your individual tastes and preferences. Here are 7 tips on what you need to consider while making your study or workspace at home.
- The right room is the most important thing.
The room where you plan on setting up your work or study space is the most important decision that all other decisions will be made around. It’s no good if you convert a tiny room that stifles productivity or use part of room that has heavy foot traffic and allows for too much distraction, hampering your ability to work or your child’s inability to complete their homework. Ideally, you want a room that allows for enough space to spread out, with good natural lighting, minimal distractions, and ample room for storage.
- Consider your lighting needs.
If you prefer natural sunlight in your study/workspace, it makes no sense then to convert a portion of your dimly lit basement that has very little natural sunlight. Conversely if you work on computers, a room with direct natural sunlight shining on your computer screen makes little sense as well.
After you choose your space, make sure you have enough light sources to see and read comfortably, so you don’t end up suffering eye strain later.
- Space to spread out and move.
If you are going to spend significant time in your home office working, or your child will be spending most afternoons and evenings completing their homework, then it’s important that they have a space that is big enough to spread out and actually work in. Trying to complete any work, whether schoolwork or that big work project in a tight, confined space, will severely impact your productivity.
- Get a good desk and chair.
Do your research and decide on the right size and kind of desk for your workspace. You want to make sure the desk suits all of your needs and if you are planning on working long hours, that it continues to be comfortable. If your space is big enough maybe having a stand-up desk option as well as a traditional desk might be a perfect option.
Not only do you want the right kind of desk, but you also want to make sure that you or your child have a good, comfortable desk chair to sit. You want it to support your posture as well as be able to sit in it for long periods of time.
- Maximise storage.
One thing a good study space or workspace definitely needs is ample storage for all of your necessary supplies. You will need a variety of different combinations of shelves, filing cabinets, and desktop organisers to help keep all of your or your child’s supplies organised and tidy. Keeping your workspace or study area tidy will help boost productivity and make sure you or your child’s work is getting done on time.
- Minimise distractions
The hardest thing about having an at home office or study area is trying to do your work or studying in a busy home environment. There are a lot of distractions, from a TV being on the background, to younger brothers and sisters playing or fighting loudly, to doorbells ringing. In order to facilitate a productive work environment, its best to try and minimise as many distractions as possible. Close your office door, turn the tv off, try and do your work around the baby’s nap time, so that you can really focus and concentrate on the tasks you need to get done.
- Decorate it to your personal tastes.
If you want to heighten your productivity, then adding your unique style to the space you have created goes a long way at making you feel at home. Use your favourite colour on a wall or add some decorative art pieces.
These are the top 7 tips to creating a great work or study space at home.
